An overseas sojourn involves many changes. To adapt well expatriates must deal with a mountain of day-to-day challenges. They must be able to mobilize their personal strengths and abilities. Support networks are a key to both surviving and thriving abroad but few expatriates, particularly accompanying spouses, can anticipate ready-made networks. These must be developed. The long-term benefits of an overseas sojourn lie in the development of new skills and abilities. Training programs focus on the day-to-day challenges, the mobilization of existent abilities, the development of support networks and the development of long-term skills.
